Meet Our Barrie Team
Simcoe Veterinary Hospital is staffed with a team of veterinarians and support staff who all share the same passion for pets. Most of them are pet owners themselves, so you can be confident knowing that when you bring your pet to our hospital, they’ll be in good hands. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about our Barrie team.
Dr. Mark Bolton, DVM
Dr. Bolton is the owner of Simcoe Veterinary Hospital. He was born and raised in Shanty Bay and attended Eastview High School in Barrie. He grew up with lots of pets and spent a lot of time working on neighbouring farms. He liked helping the animals and wanted to become a surgeon. In high school, he worked at clinics and travelled to different farms with large animal veterinarians. He did many farms duties including milking cows. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Guelph before attending the Ontario Veterinary College.
As one of our veterinarians, Dr. Bolton keeps our patients healthy. He performs examinations, gives vaccines, does wellness blood testing and parasite prevention. He treats sick animals and performs surgery as well as dental cleanings and surgical extractions of teeth.
Dr. Bolton and Dr. Schmidt have two kids, Lauren and Carter. They also have a Doberman named Stella, a donkey named Moritz, two ponies named Foxy and Scout, and Dr. Bolton’s favourite pet, a guinea pig named Twinkle Toes. The family enjoys working around the farm, boating and swimming in the summer and skiing and tobogganing in the winter.
Dr. Bolton has attended many extra courses on general and orthopedic surgery, dentistry and oral surgery. He feels most fulfilled performing a complicated surgery or successfully completing a difficult dental case. Watching the pets go on to heal and be comfortable is very rewarding.
Dr. Katrin Schmidt, DVM
Hospital Administrator and Chief Veterinary Director
Dr. Katrin Schmidt is in charge of making sure all team members understand their impact on the client-and-pet experience to ensure a better outcome for all. She was born and raised in Germany in a rural mountain setting. She enjoyed horseback riding and country living at an early age. In fact, she spent most of her childhood working with animals including horses. Training horses exposed her to many of the behaviour principles we apply to most species, including humans. As a teenager, she lived in Dallas, Texas, and Hudson, Quebec.
Dr. Schmidt has always had a passion for medicine, science, and technology. Her interest and experience in solving complex problems with new and unique ways led her to attend the Veterinary College in Guelph. Veterinary medicine seemed just a little bit more challenging than human medicine or computer science.
Since graduating with a BSc. in 1991 and a DVM in 1993, Dr. Schmidt—along with her husband, Dr. Bolton—has been a veterinary practice owner since 2000. She co-founded the Barrie Veterinary Emergency Clinic in 2001. As primary patient care coordinator and hospital administrator, it was important for her to be adequately trained in patient and client care as well as business needs. So in 2004, she completed her Certificate of Veterinary Practice Managers diploma and most recently graduated from the MBA program at Lakehead University.
With her work experience in veterinary community services, she is able to help clients and members of the team with personal and professional challenges and dreams. Helping others succeed in improving pet health and strengthening the human animal bond continues to be a rewarding experience. As a constant learner, she also enjoys educating and coaching others.
Dr. Schmidt is very fortunate to have her immediate family residing in the Barrie and Orillia area. She lives with her husband, Dr. Bolton; their two children; and their Doberman and ponies in lovely Horseshoe Valley. The family loves spending time outdoors both in the summer and winter.
Dr. Holly Spring, DVM
Dr. Spring grew up on the family dairy farm in Elmvale, where her childhood was enriched with many different animals, from cats to cows. She loved to work with the animals and was inspired by the family farm vet who treated the sick animals.
Dr. Spring attended the University of Guelph and completed her undergraduate work in animal biology. She volunteered and worked at clinics to get experience. She went on to complete her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College. Now, she works with companion animals, mostly dogs and cats. She performs surgery and examinations. She also educates clients about preventive care, nutrition, pain management, and dermatology.
Dr. Spring and her husband, Dr. Cameron Lindsay, have a household of furry children. Maude is their happy go lucky Boston terrier. They also have four cats named Jim, Pete, Herb, and Ronald. She likes spending time with friends and family, CrossFit training, and cross country skiing in her spare time.
Dr. Lindsey Rogers, DVM
Dr. Lindsey Rogers is our new associate veterinarian. She brings with her a special interest in veterinary medicine including internal medicine cases, lameness and rehabilitation. Dr. Rogers is a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist, obtaining certification at the Canine Rehabilitation Institute in Florida in 2014.
Dr. Rogers is local to the area, growing up in Barrie and attending Barrie North Collegiate before getting her Honours degree in the Biomedical Science program at the University of Guelph. She then graduated top of class from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2011.
Lindsey’s passion for the wellbeing of animals began at an early age; she remembers having a special fondness for her family’s pet cats and attending vet visits with her parents. Dr. Rogers has remained a Simcoe resident and has spent the last 8 years working in a small animal practice in Barrie. Her and her husband Eric live in Springwater where they spend their time getting together with friends for game nights or catching up on the news.
When not at home or the cottage, Lindsey and Eric spend their time taking care of their pet family: Carter, a 6year old golden retriever who is the best behaved of the bunch, always willing to please and greet you with a toy; Ernie, a smooth coated Brussels Griffon puppy, is the new addition to the clan who always has the family laughing at his antics; and Lenny and Carl – 11 year old domestic shorthair brothers. Lenny can be found anywhere there is food or a plastic bag to chew on. Carl can be found screaming outside the bedroom door at 6am when it is time for love.

Danielle is one of our full-time Registered Veterinary Technicians. She strives to keep your pet’s stress as minimal as possible while at Simcoe Veterinary Hospital, especially our feline friends who don’t venture out of their homes very often.

She did just that after having her two children, Mitchell and Dana. She graduated with honours from the Veterinary Technician Program through Georgian College in 2006. Since graduating, Danielle has stayed in the small animal vet industry and now enjoys working with clients and their furry family members. She also enjoys helping out and fostering for local rescue groups and giving a voice for those who don’t have an owner.
During her time off, Danielle likes to spend time with her kids and her furry creatures that she has collected in her years in the veterinary profession. She is owned by six kitties, two dogs and two rats! When they aren’t keeping her busy, she also likes to keep active, read and garden.
Jen Hart, RVT
Registered Veterinary Technician
Jen is a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) who graduated with honours from Georgian College in April 2015 and became registered soon after. She was born and raised in Hamilton, went to McMaster University, and graduated with an honour’s Bachelor of Arts in psychology neuroscience and behaviour. She went on to receive an advanced diploma in autism and behavioural sciences. After working in the developmental services field for a couple years, her love for animals found her relocating her life up north.

She recently moved to Waubaushene with her spouse and their three cats Piper, Joe, and Breeze. Outside of work she enjoys gardening, travelling and renovating her house.
